Living Between Worlds: The Expat Experience

Do you sometimes feel like you're living between different worlds - never fully belonging anywhere?

Expatriation, repatriation, immigration, mixed families… these experiences are rich and full of discovery, but they can also leave you feeling unsettled, lonely, lost, or torn between cultures.

Perhaps you ask yourself:

  • Who am I now?

  • Where do I truly belong?

  • Why do I feel like a stranger everywhere?

  • Will I ever feel at home again?

You're not alone

These questions are at the heart of the expatriate experience. As an English-speaking practitioner who has lived 25 years abroad in 7 different countries, I know these questions intimately.

I understand the richness of multicultural identities and the confusion and sense of uprooting that it can also create.

Together, we can make sense of these experiences, so you can find grounding, connection, and a feeling of inner wholeness.

The Hidden Challenges of Expatriation

Expatriate life looks glamorous from the outside. But the reality is often more complex.

What many expats experience

Identity confusion and loss of self

  • Feeling like you're losing yourself

  • Not knowing who you are anymore

  • Constant code-switching between cultures

  • Feeling like a chameleon, adapting everywhere, belonging nowhere

Chronic sense of displacement

  • Never feeling fully "at home"

  • Missing something you can't quite name

  • Nostalgia for multiple places at once

  • Grief for the life you left behind

Relationship challenges

  • Difficulty maintaining deep connections

  • Friendships that feel surface-level

  • Feeling misunderstood by people "back home"

  • Strain in partnerships due to cultural differences

  • Challenge of raising Third Culture Kids (TCKs)

Emotional and mental strain

  • Anxiety about constant adaptation

  • Depression or emptiness

  • Feeling exhausted from always "performing"

  • Grief for lost connections and experiences

  • Burnout from cultural adjustment

Third Culture Adults  struggles

  • Adults struggling with identity

  • Difficulty answering "Where are you from?"

  •  Never truly fitting in

  • Loss of language and cultural connection

Repatriation shock

  • Reverse culture shock when returning "home"

  • Feeling like a stranger in your own country

  • Not fitting in anywhere anymore

  • Disappointment that "home" doesn't feel like home

Why Online Therapy Helps Expats Worldwide

Many expats push through these challenges alone, thinking they "chose this life" so they should just cope. But expatriation is a profound identity transition that deserves proper support.

How expat therapy can help

Find home within yourself Therapy helps you develop an internal sense of home that travels with you. No matter where you are geographically, you'll find stability inside. This inner ground gives you calm and strength.

Build a solid multicultural identity Instead of feeling split between cultures, you'll weave them together into a unique, solid sense of self. You'll celebrate your multicultural identity rather than feeling fragmented by it.

Process grief and loss Expatriation involves real grief - for people, places, and the life you left behind. Therapy provides space to honor these losses and integrate them into your story.

Navigate cultural complexity Learn to navigate multiple cultural realities without losing yourself. You'll develop the skills to move fluidly between worlds while staying grounded.

Heal cultural wounds Address experiences of discrimination, microaggressions, or cultural misunderstanding that may have left emotional scars.

Free yourself from constant adaptation No more pressure to "fit in" everywhere. You'll learn to live authentically without hiding or shrinking parts of yourself.

Make aligned choices Instead of being pulled by expectations or circumstances, you'll choose what truly matters to you. That brings peace and joy.

Support your family If you have children or a partner, therapy can help you navigate cultural differences and create harmony at home.

Questions Expats Often Ask

  • Yes. I lived abroad for 25 years in seven countries across three continents. I have experienced multiple international moves, raised Third Culture Kids, navigated repatriation, and built a life between cultures. This isn't theory - it's lived experience that informs every session.

  • Yes. Research shows that online therapy is equally effective as in-person therapy for most issues. For expats especially, online therapy offers unique advantages: you can access support from anywhere in the world, maintain continuity if you move countries, and work from the comfort of your own home. Many clients find it easier to open up in their own familiar environment.

  • Yes, if you prefer. I'm fluent in English, French, and Spanish. Many of my expat clients find it crucial to do therapy in their native language or the language they feel most comfortable expressing emotions in. We can even switch languages within a session if that feels natural.

  • Absolutely. That's one of the major benefits of online therapy for expats. If you move from Dubai to Singapore to London, our work continues uninterrupted. Many of my clients have moved countries multiple times during our work together.

  • Yes. This is very common. In our sessions, we can work on how to communicate your experience to your partner.  Learn to create space for mutual understanding.

  • My practice focuses on adults. However, I can support you as a parent of Third Culture Kids to better understand and support your children through their own cultural journey. I can also refer you to therapists who specialize in younger children/adolescents if needed.

  • Very normal. Many expats feel guilty for struggling when they "chose" expatriation. But choosing something doesn't make it easy. Expatriation involves real losses and challenges that deserve acknowledgment and support. You're not ungrateful - you're human.

  • Online sessions are completely confidential. I follow the same strict confidentiality protocols as in-person therapy. Make sure you're in a private space during sessions where you won't be overheard.

  • I offer flexible scheduling to accommodate clients in different time zones across Europe, Middle East, Africa, and the Americas. For clients in Asia-Pacific, we can discuss early morning or evening slots. Contact me to find a time that works for your location.
